Welcome

Hello and welcome to Derby Talking Newspapers. We provide local news and information in audio format, on a USB stick, fortnightly to anybody who has difficulty with the written word. We were founded in 1974 and it has always been a service that is completely free of charge.

You can use this website to find out about registering for Derby Talking Newspapers, referring a friend, relative or client to us, or volunteering with us.

Our Recordings

We offer two kinds of recordings, on USB memory sticks, which we send fortnightly. They are our flagship monthly Local News Miscellany, which has news articles from the Derby Telegraph along with feature articles from other publications from around Derbyshire, read by our volunteers. We also have bespoke content such as a quiz and interview to name but a couple. We realise that many news articles would not last 4 weeks so we rarely cover the main stories that you would hear on the radio or television. Instead we focus on articles that may not be covered by the broadcast media such as items about new developments around the county, human interest stories, business news etc. We do not cover political stories and bad news – there is enough of both in the mainstream media.

We complement our Miscellany with compilations of national, well known magazines drawn from the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) subscription service. We have General Interest, Women’s Interest and Sport compilations which are sent every fortnight.

We can provide a free and easy to use digital playback speaker, which is on permanent loan for as long as you need it.

Derby Talking Newspapers is registered charity 1198808 and our work is entirely dependent on volunteers, donations and grants. If you’d like to help us continue our work, consider volunteering, or if you can afford to, please donate.
